New NYSED regulations affecting graduation requirements

This week, the NYSED Board of Regents officially adopted two rules that affect current graduation requirements. One rule expands the safety net for students with disabilities, and one creates a new pathway to graduation for students in Career Development Occupational Studies.

At the June 2016 meeting, the New York State Board of Regents approved through emergency action an amendment to section 100.5 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education to require superintendents to make a local determination as to the academic proficiency for eligible students with disabilities to graduate with a local diploma. CDOS-new graduation pathway for all students (approved as a permanent rule at the June Regents meeting); amends Sections 100.5 and 100.6
At their March 2016 meeting, the New York State Board of Regents approved through emergency action an amendment to sections 100.5 and 100.6 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education to establish a new Career Development Occupational Studies (CDOS) graduation pathway for all students. The regulations were approved as a permanent rule at the June Regents meeting are applicable to all students who are otherwise eligible to graduate in June 2016 and thereafter.
